Food and Environmental Allergies in Chicago
We have more than 25 years of experience identifying hidden reactions to foods, additives, dyes, heavy metals, chemicals, and other environmental allergens. These are often poorly diagnosed as Asthma, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Chronic Sinusitis, ADD/ADHD, Migraine Headache, Fibromyalgia, Autoimmune disease, and others.
We have seen children as young as 6 months old, and adults as old as 91. We help all ages of people move from chronically ill, or "not very well" to feeling good. Sometimes allergies cause immediate responses like rashes or swelling in the face or lips, or hives. However, other reactions may be delayed. This delayed type of allergic response can cause inflammatory reactions in all parts of the body - the sinuses, digestive system, respiratory system, brain, blood vessels, kidney and bladder, and connective tissue - and be the basis for chronic diseases that just won't go away. We have found that our patients make amazing changes for the better when we discover the underlying allergic causes of their problems. The inflammatory reactions stop, the headaches, sinus problems, irritable bowel, reflux, and other illnesses go away, and their whole state of health improves.
To find out what you are reacting to, we use an advanced computerized system. Here are some of the frequently asked questions about our system.
Computerized Food and Environmental Allergy Assessment
What is a computerized food and environmental assessment?
It's a test of the way you react to foods, additives, dyes, chemicals, and anything else in your diet or environment that may be making you sick. The computer measures electric response at acupuncture points. To read more about the groundbreaking experiments confirming that the acupuncture system is an electronic network that can be measured, see Robert O. Becker, M.D.'s excellent book, The Body Electric.
How does it work?
By contact with the acupuncture points on your fingers, the computer system can read the balance of energy in your lungs or other organs; it can reflect your reactions to food and food additives. It can show stress from reactions to dust, molds, and other allergens, toxic chemicals, or metals; from infections; and from your emotional state. We can even test your supplements and tell you whether you react to them, and whether they are worth taking.
What kind of results do people get?
People who follow what the assessment shows have had the following illnesses (and often more than one illness) "just go away," or get remarkably better: Asthma, hives, chronic sinus congestion and infections, "irritable bowel syndrome", chronic stomach pain, inflammatory bowel disease, gall bladder disease, acid reflux, migraine headaches, early stages of arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, and many others. What we hear most often from people is "You saved my life," or "I used to feel bad all the time and maybe have a few good days. Now I feel good all the time, and maybe occasionally have a bad day."
How much experience do you have with this technology?
We have used it for more than 10 years and tested thousands of people.
Is it expensive?
No, it is very economical. The comprehensive panel costs under $250.00. That is part of the reason we use it, along with the fact that it is very accurate and reliable. In order to get the same comprehensive set data with methods commonly used in our current system, the cost would be about two thousand dollars, or nearly ten times as much.
Does it hurt?
It is totally non-invasive. It feels just like having someone put the smooth end of a ballpoint pen on your finger.
Is it a medical test?
No, it is not considered to be a medical test here in the United States. However, it has been clinically shown to have nearly a 99% accuracy, and is used by a significant number of MDs in Germany. It has to be classified as non-medical and non-diagnostic here in the United States. That's why we call our computer procedures assessments rather than scans or tests, and we say that they indicate reactivity to food or other substances, rather than that they diagnose allergy.
What are some of the kinds of assessments you do?
The Comprehensive Assessment, the Healthy Ageing Assessment, the Stress Filters Assessment, and Individualized Supplement Assessments.
What is included in the Comprehensive Assessment?
It surveys your response to common allergenic foods (wheat, gluten, dairy, corn, eggs, soy, sugars, etc.) food additives, food dyes, heavy metals, environmental chemicals, microbes, and hormones. We developed this panel from the 14,000 items available in our computer system. Other practitioners who use this type of computer system often test these items one at a time, a long, tedious, and costly process. This panel is very user-friendly, and takes less than a half hour to complete.
What is included in the Healthy Ageing Assessment?
Neurotransmitters, Vitamins, Minerals, Amino Acids, Hormones Dr. Howard developed this panel based on research by a healthy aging specialist who determined the neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and hormones that are primary in the aging process. Some examples are serotonin, dopamine, GABA, vitamins A, B's, C, D, and E; boron, calcium, magnesium and zinc. These are all in a convenient panel that takes about ten minutes to complete. It costs less than $100. Testing these items with blood tests can cost thousands of dollars.
What is the Stress Filters Assessment, and what do you mean by Stress Filters?
This panel measures reactions to general categories of items that can be factors in causing health problems - including dietary stress, stress from environmental pollutants, structural stress (such as spinal or shoulder stress from computer postures), dental stress, stress from common microbes—bacteria, viruses and fungi, stress from poor elimination or poor lymphatic circulation, circulatory stress, emotional stress, and others. Very often, checking these categories can lead us quickly in the right direction.
What are Individualized Supplement Assessments? Can you test my supplements?
You bring in the supplements, and our computer system can test your reactivity to what you are taking and help to determine how much you should take. We have saved people tens or sometimes hundreds of dollars a month by helping them reduce their supplements to the ones that really are of value to them, and by finding out that very often, "less is more."
Other Individualized Assessments
What else can you test?
We are able to assess response to 14,000 items in our computer. For example, we can test reactivity to all the common fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, grains, and oils; and to body products, cleaning products, or other item that you bring in. We have assisted clients in determining which kinds of flooring, fabrics, carpeting and paints to use in doing a home rehab. All of our assessments give you an accurate, economical, and non-invasive way to make changes to your own individual diet and environment that will support your best state of health.
After you do the assessments, what are your treatments for allergy?
Of course, the best thing is to stay away from the food, pollen, or other allergen that is causing you problems. However, there are quite a few good ways to help your system become less reactive:
- Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese herbal medicine.
- Applied sound therapy: We have used sound therapy as a non-invasive way to improve chronic sinus congestion caused by allergy, and for many other conditions. To learn more about sound therapy click here.
- Allergy desensitization. Drops are especially made for each individual, and can help lower reactivity to allergens.
- Supplements to help modulate your immune system.
- Guided Imagery for Health. Much research has been done about the positive health effects of guided imagery. Click here to read more.
We Assess With Advanced Testing Methods
All our assessments are done with a computer based system that is highly accurate, efficient, cost-effective, and non-invasive.
Our Comprehensive Assessment includes:
We check for any reaction to all of the common food allergens - gluten, dairy, egg, soy, corn, peanuts, tree nuts, yeast, sugar, and many others. We can also check for reactions to almost all foods, even if they are not common allergens - we have 14,000 items in our computer database. You will see your results immediately!
- Food Additives
FD&C food dyes, aspartame, MSG, sulfites.
- Airborne Allergens
We check for the common airborne allergens - feathers, trees, grass, dust, mold, weeds.
- Environmental Chemicals and Heavy Metals
We include many common chemicals and heavy metals - formaldehyde, benzene, chlorine, lead, mercury, cadmium - on our initial assessment and have hundreds more in our computer database.
Available Supplemental Assessments:
- Healthy Aging: Neurotransmitters, Vitamins, Minerals, Hormones
We include neurotransmitters, vitamins, minerals, and hormones that have been scientifically determined to affect aging. Some examples are serotonin, dopamine, GABA, vitamins A, B’s, C, D, and E; boron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and others
- Herbs, Vitamins, Supplements
We test the value and reactivity of any supplement you bring in. We have saved clients hundreds of dollars per year by testing supplements they were taking that were either useless or harmful. Many times, less is better.
- Body and Cleaning Products
We can test for reactivity to any body product or cleaning product that you bring in. We have solved many medical mysteries for people with skin allergies by finding reactions to one or more cosmetics, lotions, detergents, and other products.
- Blood Testing
We also order blood tests from Quest, and other labs, if they are indicated.
