Dr. Howard has 25 years of experience working with women's and men's health issues. She has been prescribing individually compounded hormone replacement therapy since 1992, as part of our Healthy Aging program. Individually tailored hormone replacement is now popularly called "bio-identical." This means that the hormones are not synthetic, they are extracted from Chinese yam, and are given in dosages that mirror the body's own hormones.
They are also given in skin creams (transdermal) or lozenges (sublingual) that take them directly into the bloodstream, rather taken into the digestive system as pills. A 2008 study of 150 women has shown that transdermal hormones benefit the heart and vascular system.
